# Jackpot Pixel

## The idea
A little gambling den drawn in chunky pixels. You sit at a felt table or a slot machine with a handful of objects
you own (cards, symbols, jokers, pegs, dice), each one a fat outlined sprite with a face and a joke, and you build
them into an engine that breaks the maths. The screen is calm while you think and then erupts when it pays out:
numbers tick up, chips clack, the mult flares red, a coin rains and the whole board shakes. It's vice made cute
and cosy: the warmth of a card room, the neon of an old casino sign, the tarot reader's table, all at a resolution
that makes every object read at a glance and every combo feel like a jackpot you earned.

## Touchstones
- **_Balatro_ (LocalThunk, 2024)**: poker hands as a pixel-art scoring engine on green felt, with jokers drawn like
collectable trading cards, a slowly swirling painted background and the whole thing run through a soft CRT
filter. Take chips-in-blue times mult-in-red, cards that sway and tilt like they're held in a hand, and
numbers as the hero of the screen.

- **_Luck be a Landlord_ (TrampolineTales, 2023)**: a slot machine you fill with your own symbols to make rent,
drawn as bold emoji-like icons in white reels on a flat orange field, with a navy menu that looks like an old
desktop. Take the flat, loud, two-colour UI, symbols that read at thumbnail size, and the dry joke of the
  landlord's emails.

- **_Peglin_ (Red Nexus Games, 2021–24)**: pachinko as a fantasy roguelike, a goblin flinging orbs into a board of
pegs under a pixel forest. Take the board as a physical toy, the bounce and clatter, and a parallax world sitting
  above the machine.
  <img src="https://shared.akamai.steamstatic.com/store_item_assets/steam/apps/1296610/ss_1a2afdad48b809a7adecea90516889316d4f21bc.1920x1080.jpg?t=1779945876" alt="Peglin: the peg board under the forest" title="Peglin: the peg board under the forest" height="140"> <img src="https://shared.akamai.steamstatic.com/store_item_assets/steam/apps/1296610/ss_71770eca91f44432783fbb971543b36f5f1023e1.1920x1080.jpg?t=1779945876" alt="Peglin: a ring of pegs" title="Peglin: a ring of pegs" height="140"> [More: Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1296610/Peglin/)
- **_Downwell_ (Moppin, 2015)**: a whole game in black, white and one red, with palettes you unlock and swap.
Take how far a tiny palette goes, and the single colour that means "this matters".
  <img src="https://shared.akamai.steamstatic.com/store_item_assets/steam/apps/360740/ss_96fa27e853e9513de825df4264e356066a3c5145.1920x1080.jpg?t=1769028721" alt="Downwell: black, white and red" title="Downwell: black, white and red" height="140"> <img src="https://shared.akamai.steamstatic.com/store_item_assets/steam/apps/360740/ss_eaab64c0e734e568912fa3ff435e7bd09a28f70b.1920x1080.jpg?t=1769028721" alt="Downwell: the well" title="Downwell: the well" height="140"> [More: Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/360740/Downwell/)
- **_Loop Hero_ (Four Quarters, 2021)**: cards played as tiles onto a looping road, in a muted, crunchy palette
with dense little panels of stats. Take the darker, grittier end of the style and a card that turns into a
  place.
  <img src="https://shared.akamai.steamstatic.com/store_item_assets/steam/apps/1282730/ss_500e7212653fa6586f7a84c89b4c60be4e425fbb.1920x1080.jpg?t=1751489185" alt="Loop Hero: the loop" title="Loop Hero: the loop" height="140"> <img src="https://shared.akamai.steamstatic.com/store_item_assets/steam/apps/1282730/ss_455789884ed94fd20410ac5a139e8c3bb8f6f369.1920x1080.jpg?t=1751489185" alt="Loop Hero: the camp" title="Loop Hero: the camp" height="140"> [More: Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1282730/Loop_Hero/)
- **The Rider–Waite–Smith tarot (Pamela Colman Smith, 1909)**: flat colour inside firm black outlines, a title
bar at the foot of every card, and a cast of archetypes each with one clear prop. Take the card as a framed
little world, and the symbol-per-card clarity.

- **The Liberty Bell slot machine (Charles Fey, c. 1899) and its copies**: three reels of bells, horseshoes and
card suits, a pay table printed on the front, cast iron and ornament. Take the pay table as a design object,
and symbols simple enough to read as they spin.

- **Las Vegas neon (Fremont Street, 1940s–80s, and the Neon Museum boneyard)**: Vegas Vic waving, tube-lit
outlines on black, signs that blink in sequence. Take outline-as-light, a dark field that lets a few colours
glow, and the chase-light rhythm of a payout.
  <img src="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:FilePath/Fremont_Street_1986.jpg" alt="Fremont Street (1986)" title="Fremont Street (1986)" height="140"> <img src="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:FilePath/Vegas_Vic-full.jpg" alt="Vegas Vic" title="Vegas Vic" height="140"> <img src="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:FilePath/Neon_Boneyard_(39146073120).jpg" alt="The Neon Boneyard" title="The Neon Boneyard" height="140"> [More: the Neon Museum](https://www.neonmuseum.org/)
- **Pachinko machines (Japan, post-war to now)**: a vertical board of pins behind glass, ringed in chrome, LEDs and
a little screen, spilling silver balls into a tray. Take sensory overload held inside a frame, and the
tray of winnings as a reward you can see.
  <img src="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:FilePath/Pachinko_machine_1.JPG" alt="A pachinko machine" title="A pachinko machine" height="140"> <img src="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:FilePath/Pachinko_machine_5.JPG" alt="A pachinko machine" title="A pachinko machine" height="140"> [More: Wikimedia Commons](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pachinko_machine_5.JPG)

## The core
1. **Objects you own, drawn as chunky pixel icons.** Cards, symbols, jokers and pegs each read at a glance at
small size: a bold silhouette, a dark outline and a bit of character. The collection is the game.
2. **The numbers are the stars.** Score, mult and money are big, in a pixel face, colour-coded by kind and
always counting up with ceremony. A payout should look like one.
3. **A loud, limited palette on a dark or felt field.** A handful of saturated colours, each with a job, against a
ground that lets them pop. Colour carries meaning before decoration.
4. **Vice made cute.** The casino, the card room, the slot machine and the fortune teller, played with a wink:
warm, tongue-in-cheek, never slick or predatory.
5. **Whole pixels.** One pixel scale, crisp nearest-neighbour edges. Effects (wobble, shake, CRT) sit over the
   pixels, they don't smear them.

## Dials

| Dial | One end | Other end |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Bold low-res icons on flat panels (Luck be a Landlord) | Detailed card faces and dense pixel scenes (Balatro, Loop Hero) |
| Field | A flat solid colour | A living background: swirling paint, parallax world, neon street |
| Screen | Clean, square pixels | Full CRT: scanlines, curvature, bloom, chromatic fringe |
| Palette | Three colours (Downwell) | Every candy colour at once (pachinko) |
| Juice | Quiet tabletop clicks | Shake, sparks, number explosions, chase lights |
| Theme | Casino and card room (felt, chips, slots) | Storybook adventure (goblins, dungeons, a road) |
| Motion | Hand-animated frames | Static sprites moved procedurally (sway, tilt, squash, bounce) |

## Directions to try
- **Pachinko parlour**: a tall board of chrome pins and LED rings, Peglin crossed with a real pachinko cabinet,
winnings piling into a tray at the bottom of the screen.
- **Neon boneyard**: a deck of dead Vegas signs on black; each tube flickers on as a combo chains, and a full hand
  lights the whole street.
- **Three-colour casino**: a Balatro-like built in a Downwell palette; colour appears only on the mult.
- **Tarot table**: every card drawn in Pamela Colman Smith's flat colour and black outline, laid out in spreads on
  velvet.
- **1909 one-armed bandit**: sepia pixel engraving, cast-iron reels and a printed pay table, Liberty Bell
  symbols.
- **Rent day desktop**: Luck be a Landlord's flat UI pushed into a fake old operating system of bills, emails and
  receipts.

## Traps
- Mixed pixel sizes, rotated or scaled sprites blurred by bilinear filtering.
- Numbers that are small, unreadable or don't celebrate: the payout is the point.
- A muddy, grey or over-dithered palette where nothing pops.
- Real-casino slickness: chrome gradients, pushy reward screens, dark patterns. Keep it cosy and in on the joke.
- Ornament crowding the board so the hand, the reels or the pegs stop being the clearest thing on screen.

## Starting points
`tokens.json` holds a felt-table palette with chips blue, mult red and coin gold, plus variants for a flat
orange slot machine, a three-colour well, Loop Hero's road through the void, a neon boneyard and a tarot
parlour. Type is a tall arcade pixel face for numbers and titles and a rounded pixel face for card text. These
are suggestions.
