The look of the mid-2020s internet once someone with taste gets hold of it. Everything is cheap, compressed, cluttered and slightly wrong: a blurry low-res word on lime green, a flash photo of a bag spilling its contents, an AI-slop creature with a coffee cup for a head, a photocopied zine, a JPEG saved a hundred times. On its own it's trash. Arranged with an eye (the right crop, the clashing colour held on purpose, one beautiful thing in the mess) it becomes the most current-feeling thing in the room. It's ugly-cool and self-aware, a reaction both to polished "clean" perfection and to the frictionless sheen of generated images, made from that same stuff and turned against it.

Hito Steyerl, "In Defense of the Poor Image" (e-flux journal, 2009)
the essay that made low resolution a value: the copy of a copy, compressed and circulated, has its own beauty and politics. Take degradation as a material, not a mistake.
a blurry, stretched lowercase word in plain Arial on a sickly lime green, ugly on purpose and instantly iconic, then endlessly remixed as a meme. Take the deliberately "wrong" default typography and one loud colour.
direct on-camera flash, harsh shadows, unglamorous settings and luxury treated like a snapshot. Take the flat, blown-out flash light that makes anything look found.
"Girl clutter" and the overstuffed bag (Miu Miu SS24 onward; goblin mode)
runway bags spilling their contents, messy apartments shown with pride, a rejection of the "clean girl" look. Take curated mess: lots of stuff, chosen.
absurd generated creatures (a shark in sneakers, a ballerina with a cappuccino for a head) with nonsense names, everywhere at once. Take the absurdity and the glossy-wrong sheen as raw material to cut up, not to imitate straight.
The analog revival (2025–26): zines, photocopies, digicams at parties
cheap 2000s digital cameras, flash at gigs, photocopied and stapled zines. Take toner grain, xerox contrast and that point-and-shoot flash. · a zine page
Cheap materials, chosen with taste Compression, flash, photocopy, stock photos, default fonts and junk, each
one picked and placed on purpose. Trash with an editor.
2
One beautiful thing in the mess A held colour, a perfect crop or a moment of real craft that tells you
someone is in control.
3
Ugly-cool, self-aware It knows it's "bad" and owns it; never apologetic, never accidentally ugly.
4
Of right now Its materials are the textures of the mid-2020s feed: memes, slop, digicams, overstuffed
bags and zines.

Directions to try
Brat field one blurry default-font word or object on a single sickly colour; the whole game in a meme
template.
Bag dump a flash-lit top-down photo of everything spilled out of a bag; play is sorting, finding, arranging.
Merz room a level built from scanned tickets, wrappers and tape, in the manner of Schwitters.
Slop menagerie absurd generated-looking creatures, cut out badly on purpose and pasted into photocopied
worlds, never presented as polished.
Digicam party everything shot with a 2006 point-and-shoot flash, red-eye, timestamp in the corner.
Zine game black-and-white photocopy, hand lettering, staples and a single spot colour.
Traps
Actually careless: no editing eye, no held idea, just mess.
Polished slop taken straight; the sheen must be cut up, degraded or framed, never the finished look.
Nostalgia-only retro (pure Y2K or 90s); this is about now.
Clean, tasteful minimalism; it has to stay a little wrong.
Being mean or punching down; ugly-cool, not cruel.

Xerox zine
suggested: black toner on cheap paper with one spot colour (zines, photocopies)
ink on background 15.8:1 AAink on surface 18.9:1 AA
Digicam flash night
suggested: on-camera flash in a dark room, blown highlights, red-eye (digicams at parties)
ink on background 18.9:1 AAink on surface 1.1:1 low
Slop gloss
suggested: the over-saturated sheen of generated images, to be cut up (AI slop, brainrot)
ink on background 12.3:1 AAink on surface 14.7:1 AA
tokens.json holds a brat-green-on-flash-white palette with photocopy black and a few lurid accents, with variants for a xerox zine, a digicam flash night and a slop gloss, plus a plain Arial-style face (the deliberate default) and a typewriter face for receipts and zines. These are suggestions.
